RAM
E.g adding some more RAM to your computer to increase performance or speed
While browsing the Clubroom you have probably seen Tim or I talking about RAM. Sometimes we suggest adding RAM to your computer to make it run faster, or adding it so you can run more programs. Adding RAM to your PC is a great way to increase performance, and can solve a few problems!
But what is RAM? RAM stands for “Random Access Memory”. You don’t really need to know that because no one will ever ask you, but it’s interesting all the same! Every time you open a program, it gets loaded from the hard drive into the RAM. This is because reading data from the RAM is much faster than reading data from the hard drive. If the computer wanted to read it from the hard drive, it would be so slow, because the hard drive has quite a lot of information on it. It would take longer to find the right files and such!
The more RAM your computer has, the more data can be loaded from the hard drive into the RAM, which is what speeds up your computer. Basically, it makes programs run quicker and stops them from crashing.
To check how much RAM you have, RIGHT click on “My Computer” or “Computer”, and select Proterties. It should tell you there!
Hope you found that interesting!

Apropos your questionnaire about the use of Facebook, Twitter etc.,it seems to me from what I know about them, that whatever you enter in them be comes beyond your control and almost inevitably ends up as common property so I never use them. Perhaps I’m wrong though ?

My daughter is visiting and she’s brought with her an android tablet. She tried to connect it to my other daughter’s wi-fi. She entered the password and the tablet said ‘Authenticating’. After a minute or so it said ‘Problems authenticating’, and it wouldn’t connect to the wifi. What could be the problem do you think?
Thank you,
Des Thomas

Hi Des. I’ve not come across this problem before, but let’s see if we can find you a solution. Other people who has experienced this have tried the following:
Restarting the router, and trying again.
Switching the tablet onto Airoplane mode or “Flight” mode for two minutes, switching it off and trying again.
Removing any networks from the tablet and then restarting it, trying to connect again.
Also make sure you are using every symbol or number in the password (if there are any), it’s easy to miss out a character from the password!

If I use Twitter or Facebook how can I be completely sure that anything I put on them will only be capable of being accessed by the people I want or authorise ?

HI James. Twitter is open to everyone, and anyone can see your posts, so I would be careful with that. But with Facebook, there are privacy options you can change, and people will only be able to see your information if they “add you as a friend”. Are you thinking about signing up to Facebook?

Hi Geoff. I’m not sure I understand your questions. Do you mean, which personal details should you use, etc?

Hi Roy. Yes, that sounds about right!
There is a handy scan you can run to see how much RAM you have, and whether or not you need some more. Click on the following website: http://www.crucial.com/uk/
Then click on “System scanner”, which is at the bottom of the large picture. Installing RAM is relatively simple, but you would need to take your PC apart, so I would recommend getting someone to come round and do it for you. But you should be able to buy the RAM yourself with the information given from that site above.
