Applies to: Anyone with Adobe Reader XI (11.x) or below
We often talk about End Of Life for products like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and even pound coins where we say “don’t use it anymore because it doesn’t have security updates” or in the case of Pound Coins “Don’t use them anymore because they are not valid”.
Sometimes other bits of software reach the end of the road too…
In this case, it’s Adobe Reader XI (or Adobe Reader 11.x).
What you need to know:
- If you’re still using Adobe Reader XI or an earlier version, then you need to install the new version.
- To check what version of Adobe Reader you have, open Adobe Reader (find it in your start menu) and click on “Help > About”.
- If you have the XI version or below, close Adobe Reader and get the latest version (Adobe Reader DC) from here https://get.adobe.com/reader/.
- There are some offers you can tick if you like, but you don’t have to.
- If you have an old version installed then it will just update it so no need to uninstall the old one first.
Let me know if you need any help with this or any other updates.
Thanks

Hi Mike,
Re:- SkyGo.
Sorry it’s been a rather long time for me to reply to your info of the 29th Aug.!! I have now, at last, got around to sorting it. I can get SkyGo on IE now I’ve managed to set it up, but apparently according to FF at present their current system does not support SkyGo but “they are working to resolve the matter”. Hope this info will be of use to someone else.
Many thanks.
Hope you haven’t been blown awaythis weekend!!
Vanessa.

Hi Vanessa, thanks for the update! For anyone following along, the Sky website only says it works with IE11 on Windows (not Edge, Firefox or Chrome). Hopefully, they will get it sorted soon!
Ahh the weather was awful over the weekend! Lots of rain and wind, but I did get out for a few walks and listen to some more episodes of the podcast I have been listening to…
Did you have a nice weekend? Did you manage to shelter from the storm?

Hi Mike,
I don’t appear to have Adobe Reader installed as it isn’t in the start menu unless Adobe Shockwave Player does the same thing which was installed on 10.8.17! However I do have Realtek Card reader which was installed 12.11.16. Would it be more adviseable just to go the adobe web site and download Adobe Reader DC from that.
Your advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks. Vanessa.

Hello
(Mike’s off on holiday this week, so I’m answering questions today!)
If it’s now been a problem for you to be without Adobe Reader (it lets you view pdf files, but nowadays there are several other programs that do this too), then to be honest I wouldn’t worry about it. In Windows 10 it’s not really essential. It’s just that if you did have it, then you’d need to update it. But if you don’t have it and that hasn’t been a problem for you, then I wouldn’t worry!

Thanks Tim – is the Realtek Reader DC one of the other programmes by any chance? If so I will leave well alone!!

Hi Vanessa
Sorry to switch you between people, Tim is off today and I’m back so I’m picking up messages.
It sounds like Realtek Reader DC is a totally different program to Adobe Reader DC so I would just leave it installed and not worry about installing Adobe Reader DC as you have managed without it so you probably don’t need it.
Let me know if this doesn’t help or if you have more details then let me know.
Thanks

Thanks Mike,
Will leave well alone for now. If I get any problems I will download the Adobe (have kept your instructions!)
Thanks again, Vanessa.

Hello Mike. The only Adobe reader that I can find is showing in the control panel which is Adobe Shockwave Player 12.2 do I have to uninstall this & download the Adobe DC.

Thanks for the question Gordon π
This is a different program from Adobe (it sounds like you don’t have Adobe Reader installed which is fine). It looks like you have the latest version of Adobe Shockwave so you don’t need to do anything.
Just in case anyone else comes across this and they don’t have the latest version you can download it from here https://get.adobe.com/shockwave/ Shockwave is generally used by some games and interactive content. If a program needs it then it will install it so you don’t need to manually install this if you don’t have it.
Hope this answers your question.
Thanks

Hi Mike
you say to close adobe reader and click on the link. when you untick the two boxes and install, does it remove the old one at the same time or do you have to do it. being an old codger I’m not into changes
thanks

Hi Robert
Thanks for the question… I have updated my post π
Yes it does remove the old one when it installs the new one, chances are you won’t see much ir any change after the install so you shouldn’t be faced with anything that looks totally different. but let me know if that isn’t the case!
Thanks
